Lincoln Half Marathon Training - Weeks 1 and 2

After the Disney Half Marathon, I took a long overdue vacation with my wife and a bunch of friends that included visiting the Walt Disney World parks (all but Disney's Animal Kingdom), Universal Islands of Adventure, and taking a short (3 night) Disney Cruise.  Technically, Week 1 of my training program for the Lincoln Half Marathon was Disney race week, so I'm going to keep the numbering convention for training weeks.

I do not plan on completely following the training plan until about Week 4 or so.  Until then, I will try to do the tempo runs and long runs each week (I'm going to be doing the "Run Less, Run Faster" training plan again, because it worked really well for Disney), plus one or two easy runs (to maintain/build cardio base), and one cross-training workout per week.  However, Week 1 was completely limited to my schedule for Disney, and Week 2 was limited to what I had time to fit in while on vacation.  So, this training summary post will be pretty basic.

Week 1 (Jan. 2-8)
Monday Jan. 2 - Rest Day - still resting from the previous Saturday's last long run before race day (I think this was supposed to be a cross-training day, but I had pretty much given up on cross-training by this point)

Tuesday Jan. 3 - 6 x 400 m intervals (Treadmill) - the last set of intervals before Disney Race Day.  Very easy and very short.

Wednesday Jan. 4 - Rest Day - Another skipped cross-training workout.

Thursday Jan. 5 - 3 mi. Easy Run - last run before Disney to get some blood flowing.

Friday Jan. 6 - Rest Day - traveling to Orlando and picking up packet at the Expo (insane!)

Saturday Jan. 7 - WDW Half Marathon (e.g., 13.1 mile long run) - Best. RACE.  EVER!

Sunday Jan. 8 - Rest Day - kind of a chill day, with a visit to Hollywood Studios to ride a couple rides and see Fantasmic.

Week 1 Totals:  19.6 running miles, 3:04:03 running time, 0 cross-training time.

Week 2 (Jan. 9-15)
Monday Jan. 9 - Rest Day - first, a character breakfast at Chef Mickey's, then a few hours each at the Magic Kingdom and Epcot, finishing up with the Epcot fireworks show, IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth (based on the novel Push by Saphire).

Tuesday Jan. 10 - Rest Day - a free day while on vacation.  Sadly, I used it to work.  :p  After dinner, we went to the Polynesian Resort to watch the Wishes firework show at Magic Kingdom from the "beach."

Wednesday Jan. 11 - Rest Day - a long day at Universal's Islands of Adventure to ride the Harry Potter ride and the Hulk roller coaster.  Fun day.

Thursday Jan. 12 - 3 mi. Easy Run - first run after the race.  My friends and I kept it at an easy 9:35/mile pace.  (3.39 miles, 32:33, 9:36/mi avg.).  After that, we drove to Port Canaveral to get on the Disney Dream for our cruise.

Friday Jan. 13 - Rest Day - enjoying the cruise.

Saturday Jan. 14 - Castaway Cay 5K - this is just a 5K Fun Run that Disney puts on for people who want to run on the morning we stopped at Castaway Cay, Disney's private island.  I started out too fast, and couldn't really get a good rhythm.  Still, it was a PR in the 5K (25:25).

Sunday Jan. 15 - Rest Day - mostly traveling home after the cruise.  Back to Minnesota and the cold.  *sigh*

Week 2 Totals: 6.5 running miles, 0:57:58 running time, 0 cross-training time.
